Buddy and I left Saturday morning at 7:15. I forgot my wallet on the table but still made it to the Valero in time. The temp was on the cool side, upper 40’s and I donned on my electric jacket but on the lowest setting. Gassed up in Roswell and NM-246 which is in great shape, wraps around the north side side of Capitan mountain. Lots of blind curves, somewhat of a roller coaster on some stretches but a great road. I would guess we viewed 50-75 antelope by the time we took out first break in Capitan NM (home of Smokey the Bear).
Meandered through Alto and Ruidosa, traffic was sparse but some restaurants and cafes are still open. We took the bypass by Inn of the Mountain Gods, which is closed but the lake looks great. NM-244 (Reservation Road) to Cloudcroft and had a burger at Dave’s Cafe. We placed the order at the counter, pay for it and they bring it to you outside. We noticed the Dusty Boot Hotel is open for business. There was a large caravan of mostly crouch rockets go through town, dozen and a half as well as a a few small groups of HDs. We passed by Uranus on our way to Sunspot, probably the most traffic we saw and then onto Timberon (truely one of my favorite highways). Cox Canyon Hwy to Mayhill, the cafe is open and looks to be serving inside judging by the motorcycles and cars in front but no one standing around. Back home through Artesia, shed the liner and changed to summer gloves, home by 6:30. We did not see temperatures above 77 degrees. It was a fantastic day.
